How to play
- Tap your piece first — legal destinations light up in its accent colour.
- Look for jump chains before making a quiet move; they are almost always right.
- Keep a back-row piece home late to block enemy crowning.
- Trade when ahead in material, avoid trades when behind.
- Reach the far rank to crown a king — kings move and capture in all four diagonals.
About this game
Checkers Lite brings the classic draughts board to the browser in a clean, readable package. You play the light side against a computer opponent that plans two moves deep on normal difficulty and punishes lazy captures on hard. The rules are the familiar ones: diagonal moves, mandatory-feeling jumps, multi-capture chains and crowning at the far rank.
The interface is deliberately uncluttered. Tap a piece and its legal moves light up; tap a destination and the piece glides there. Captures animate a satisfying hop over the victim, and when a chain capture is available the game highlights the whole sequence so nothing feels ambiguous. Promoted kings get a subtle crown mark and move both diagonals in both directions.
What makes the computer opponent feel alive is its patience on defence. It will trade pieces when the arithmetic favours it, retreat into a double-corner structure when behind, and force your hand with zugzwang positions in the endgame — that classic moment where every move you have available loses something.
Score tracking records wins, losses and streaks locally, and the AI strength is selectable before each match. Games run five to fifteen minutes, making this the perfect tea-break board game. If you learned checkers from a physical board, the move legality here is strict and traditional — no flying kings, no mandatory capture rule defaults off.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to take a capture if one exists?
Not in the default rule set. Mandatory captures can feel frustrating for casual play, so the house rules here leave them off.
Can I play more than one game difficulty?
Yes — Easy, Normal and Hard are selectable from the start screen, and the AI depth changes accordingly.
What happens when a piece reaches the far side?
It is crowned as a king, marked with a crown, and gains movement and capture in all four diagonal directions.
Are my results saved?
Yes, wins, losses and your current streak are stored locally on your device.
