How to play
- Open the centre first — centre openings reveal more than corner ones.
- A number showing its full count of adjacent flags means its other neighbours are safe.
- One-touch numbers with two hidden neighbours mean both are mines.
- Corner tiles touch fewer squares, so they carry stronger logical weight.
- Never guess until the board is down to a genuine 50/50 — this version avoids those.
About this game
Mine Sweeper is the browser puzzle genre in its purest form: a grid of covered squares, a handful of hidden mines, and numbers that tell you exactly how many mines touch each revealed tile. No reflexes, no timer pressure unless you want it — just you and a wall of logic that always, always contains the answer.
This implementation offers three field sizes from a gentle nine-by-nine with ten mines up to a proper expert board, and it guarantees a safe first click: the first tile you open is never a mine, and the opening flood-fill usually reveals a generous working area. Long-press or right-click plants a flag, and the mine counter at the top tracks how many flags remain to place.
The game is strict about fairness: every board is solvable by pure deduction, including the notoriously nasty endgame positions where other versions force a coin-flip. Numbers render in colour-coded clarity, revealed regions have soft depth shading, and a chording shortcut lets experienced players open all neighbours of a satisfied number in one tap.
Victory reveals the full board and your time, which is stored locally per difficulty. Lose and the offending mine detonates with a brief screen shake before the whole field exposes itself so you can study exactly where the read went wrong. It is the most learnable game in the catalogue and the one with the highest skill ceiling per square metre.
Frequently asked questions
Can the first click be a mine?
No. The board regenerates behind the scenes so your first reveal is always safe and usually opens a flood-fill region.
What board sizes are available?
Three: Beginner (9x9, 10 mines), Intermediate (16x16, 40) and Expert (a 16x30-style field with 99).
How do I flag on a phone?
Long-press any covered square. A flag mode toggle is also available in the header for one-tap flagging.
Are boards always solvable without guessing?
Yes — this version guarantees every board is solvable by pure logic, including endgames.
